How to Track Group Owner Removal Events Without PowerShell

Group owners play an important role in Microsoft 365 governance. They can manage group membership, control settings, and influence how collaboration resources are maintained. Because of this, tracking when a group owner is removed is important for both security and auditing.

Whether you want to: i) Investigate unexpected owner removals, ii) Audit ownership changes or iii) Track who removed owners from groups, you need clear visibility into group owner removal events.

Microsoft Entra ID captures these activities through audit logs, but finding the exact records you need is not always straightforward.

The Challenge with Native Entra Audit Logs

To track group owner removals using the native approach, admins typically need to:

  1. Navigate to the Entra Admin Center
  2. Open Audit Logs
  3. Configure filters manually
  4. Search for the:
    • “Remove owner from group” event

While this works, it introduces a few challenges:

  • Event filtering requires manual effort
  • Audit logs can contain a lot of unrelated activity
  • Identifying actor-specific removals requires additional investigation
  • Sharing the report requires downloading the logs first

For regular governance reviews, this process can become time-consuming.

A Simpler Approach Is Coming Soon
