How to Track Group Owner Addition Events Without PowerShell

Group owners play a critical role in Microsoft 365. They can: i) Manage group membership, ii)Control group settings, iii) Approve access requests and iv) Oversee collaboration resources. Because of this, tracking who gets assigned as a group owner is an important governance and security task.

Microsoft Entra ID records these activities through audit logs, but finding the exact events you need isn't always straightforward.

The Challenge with Native Entra Audit Logs

To track group owner additions using the native approach, admins typically need to:

  1. Navigate to the Entra Admin Center
  2. Open Audit Logs
  3. Configure filters manually
  4. Search for the: "Add owner to group" event

While this works, it introduces several challenges:

  • Event filtering requires manual effort
  • Audit logs can contain significant noise
  • Identifying actor-specific activity requires additional investigation
  • Sharing reports requires downloading logs first

For regular governance reviews, this process can quickly become time-consuming.
